Counseling versus psychotherapy
It can be helpful to distinguish the services offered by different sexology professionals to guide you towards the service that best suits your needs.
A counseling approach in sexology addresses issues experienced in the present moment, in everyday life. It involves developing concrete tools to deal with these issues, gaining a better understanding of a situation, validating choices, or addressing questions. This work typically takes place over the short or medium term.

This approach can be provided by a sexologist who has obtained a Bachelor's degree in Sexology AND is a member of the Order of Sexologists of Quebec (OPSQ).

The Order of Psychologists of Quebec (OPQ) defines psychotherapy as 'a psychological treatment for a mental disorder, behavioral disturbances, or any other problem resulting in psychological distress or suffering that aims to promote significant changes in the client's cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, interpersonal system, personality, or health status. This treatment goes beyond providing help to cope with common difficulties or providing advice or support.' It typically involves long-term treatment and may be more punctual.

This approach must be provided by a psychotherapist sexologist who has completed a master's degree in clinical sexology and obtained a psychotherapist license from the OPQ. The professional must also be a member of the Order of Sexologists of Quebec (OPSQ).
